Canoe trip June 29th, 2011
A little breeze and about 75 degrees, a perfect day to take a canoe trip.
My wife “Rita” and I left at 10:00 a.m. from Veterans Park Canoe Launch area and traveled southward to the walking path bridge before River Road. The trip took about an hour. There were NO bugs! Beginning the journey along Western Green Park the water moved very slow. A SIGNIFICANT amount of water grasses were holding the water back. The river grass was very thick along the first part of the route and showed up on and off throughout the trip. No blockages to speak of, we got out of our canoe once due to low water and rocks (this along the last turn before River Road). The grass along the banks was very high and blocked ones view of residential homes and other natural scenery. At the beginning of the trip not too far down on the right side a homeowner had lost a manmade brick/rock wall which was lying in the river. This needs to be addressed. Some of rocks and concrete blocks could damage watercraft. Water depth along our route was OK. We ran into 3-4 quick water/rapids areas which made the trip fun. The first rapids are on the south side of the South Street Bridge and the others are between the South Street Bridge and River Road.
