Rain Rain Let It Rain!!!

Posted 277 days ago ago by Scott Mink

Brian and Rita Tkachuk took a canoe trip from south most River Road Bridge to Windsor Road.  The length of our ride was difficult to judge as some stops were made to clear debris.  We left at 1:20 and ended at 3:40.  No bugs.  Despite the recent rains, struggled again with water depth issues, having to get out of the canoe about 20 times.  Today our goal was to log GPS points and areas for future river clean up efforts.  Our GPS gave out about half way through the trip as the battery was low.  The water was very clean/clear, viewed many fish of various sizes.  Water depth varied between 1ft to 2.5 ft.

Suggestions:

Tie a rope to the front of your canoe as it will come in handy for shallow areas.

Wear old tennis shoes if you are not using waders.

Water is getting cooler, wear your waders.

There is an Island in this stretch, stay to the right.

Watch for a couple orange flags where deeper holes were marked, future fish crib areas??

Green flag put about 100 yards from Windsor Street Bridge

Be careful around the blockages as the water gets deeper

Using a canoe, the most experienced navigator should be in the FRONT rather then the back as the rocks can be very challenging to move around.

Notes from trip:

  • Deep holes (2ft) noticed by the first blockage area (we could view ABS buildings)
  • Found a wood bridge someone built to cross the river at a shallow point.

Brian ripped it out and tossed on the side.

  • Grass in the river was noticed only where there was NO tree coverage.
  • Worst tree down areas started at and after Franco and Sherri’s place.

There are 4-5 blockages of varying size.

  • The worst blockage is down a ways from Franco and Sherri, look for a park bench on the right side, up on a hill off of a corn field.
